Why we use pen names

We use pen names to honor the women writers who came before us, women like Mary Anne Evans (George Eliot), the Brontë sisters, and George Sand, who adopted male names so their work could be taken seriously in a world that dismissed women’s voices. They wrote under disguises not by choice, but because their brilliance was overlooked in their own names.

By using pen names today, we pay tribute to their courage and acknowledge the barriers they faced. It’s our way of saying that every voice deserves to be heard, every story deserves dignity, and literacy belongs to everyone.
