Our Artificial
Intelligence Policy
AI + AI = RI:
Why Artificial Intelligence Needs Actual Intelligence to Create Real Intelligence and Why This Matters for Literacy
For centuries, human intelligence has been defined by our ability to read, reason, imagine, and connect. Today, we stand at the threshold of a new era, one in which artificial intelligence is becoming a partner in how we learn, create, and solve problems. But as powerful as AI is, it cannot replace the depth, nuance, and lived experience of human thought.
That’s why the future belongs to a simple but transformative equation:
AI + AI = RI
Artificial Intelligence + Actual Intelligence = Real Intelligence
This formula captures a truth we cannot afford to ignore: Real intelligence emerges only when technology and humanity work together.
Artificial Intelligence:
The Accelerator
Artificial intelligence can process information at extraordinary speed. It can analyze patterns, summarize complex ideas, and generate possibilities that spark new thinking. It can support educators, empower learners, and expand access to knowledge in ways that were unimaginable a decade ago.
But AI alone is not enough.
AI can generate information, but it cannot determine meaning. AI can produce answers, but it cannot choose values. AI can simulate language, but it cannot feel the weight of a child’s first breakthrough in reading.
AI is a tool. A powerful one, but still a tool.
Actual Intelligence:
The Anchor
Actual intelligence, human intelligence, is rooted in lived experience, empathy, creativity, and moral judgment. It is shaped by culture, community, memory, and emotion. It is what allows us to understand not just what something means, but why it matters.
Actual intelligence is what makes literacy more than decoding. It makes reading a doorway to identity, imagination, and possibility.
We humans bring:
context
compassion
curiosity
ethical reasoning
emotional depth
cultural understanding
These are the qualities that AI cannot replicate and should never try to replace.
Real Intelligence:
The Partnership
When artificial intelligence and actual intelligence work together, something new emerges: real intelligence. Real intelligence is not artificial or human, it is collaborative. It is the fusion of:
machine speed
human wisdom
computational power
emotional insight
pattern recognition
lived experience
Real intelligence is what happens when AI amplifies human potential instead of replacing it. It’s the teacher who uses AI to design a lesson but relies on intuition to reach a struggling student. It’s the parent who uses AI to find resources but uses love to build a child’s confidence. It’s the learner who uses AI to practice reading but uses courage to keep going.
Real intelligence is the partnership that makes learning more accessible, more equitable, and more human.
Why This Matters for Literacy
Literacy is the foundation of all intelligence, artificial and actual. Without the ability to read, learners cannot fully participate in the world of ideas, technology, or opportunity. AI can support literacy.
AI can accelerate literacy. But only humans can experience literacy.
Only humans feel the pride of reading a word for the first time. Only humans understand the dignity that comes with being able to read a form, a sign, a story, a dream.
This is why literacy remains a human right, and why AI must serve that right, not overshadow it.
A Future Built on Real Intelligence
The future of learning, creativity, and community will not be shaped by AI alone. It will be shaped by how we use AI, why we use AI, and who we use AI for.
Real intelligence emerges when:
AI expands access
Humans provide meaning
Technology amplifies dignity
Communities shape the purpose
Learners remain at the center
This is the future we are building, one where artificial intelligence and actual intelligence work together to unlock the full potential of every learner.
Because when we combine the speed of machines with the wisdom of people, we don’t just create better tools.
We create a better world.
